The Prado is a touring favourite, and most on the road are the 150 Series (2009 to 2024), with the 3.0-litre 1KD diesel in earlier models, the 2.8-litre 1GD diesel from 2015, and a 4.0-litre petrol V6 in some versions. The new 250 Series arrived in 2024 with the 2.8 diesel and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Whatever the generation, a Prado that won't start usually comes down to the battery, fuel, the starter or the security system.

Why won't my Prado start?

  • Flat battery: the most common cause, especially after a few days parked with a fridge, dashcam or other accessory connected.
  • Accessory drain: touring gear wired straight to the starting battery, or a dual-battery system that isn't isolating properly, can flatten the main battery overnight.
  • Fuel filter or water in fuel: a blocked filter or water contamination can stop a diesel. Watch for a water-in-fuel warning light.
  • Running out of diesel: air gets into the system and it may need priming or bleeding before it will start again.
  • Starter motor or connections: one heavy click with good battery voltage often points to the starter or a corroded cable.
  • Key or immobiliser: a flashing security light or a flat key fob battery can stop the engine from being allowed to start.

My Prado battery keeps going flat. Why?

Prados often carry fridges, lights, inverters, UHFs and dashcams, and anything that runs while the engine is off draws from a battery. If your Prado has a second battery, the isolator or DC-DC charger should stop accessories pulling the starting battery down. If it's faulty or wired incorrectly, you'll find a flat cranking battery after a night or two. Unplug accessories and see if the problem stops. If it does, have the auxiliary wiring checked by an auto electrician.

It cranks but won't fire. What should I check?

  • Fuel level and whether the problem started straight after a fill. Contaminated fuel is a real possibility in remote areas.
  • Water-in-fuel warning light, check-engine light or a flashing security symbol on the dash.
  • When the fuel filter was last changed. If you've been touring on dusty roads or with questionable fuel, it may be overdue.
  • Cold mornings: if it only struggles when cold, the battery or glow plug system is more likely than a fuel fault.
  • Don't crank for more than about 10 seconds at a time. Long cranking overheats the starter and flattens the battery.

Is it safe to jump start a Prado?

Yes, following the owner's manual. Connect positive to positive first, then the negative lead to a bare metal earth point on the engine away from the battery. On a Prado with a dual-battery setup, jump the main starting battery, not the auxiliary. If it starts but goes flat again within days, the battery or charging system needs testing.

When should I call a mechanic?

Get help if the battery tests healthy but it still won't start, if there's a water-in-fuel warning or you suspect bad fuel, if it won't restart after running out of diesel, or if you smell fuel around the engine bay. If your diesel Prado starts but then smokes, loses power or shows a DPF warning, our Toyota Prado DPF guide covers those problems.
