Toyota Hilux Rough Idle, Knocking or Misfire (Diesel, Australia)

The common causes of rough running in the 2.8 and 3.0 Hilux diesels, what a knock or shake might mean, and how to tell a minor issue from one that needs urgent attention.

Diesels always sound a bit rattly, so it can be hard to know when a Hilux has gone from normal to not right. Most Hilux diesels on the road are the current-generation 2.8-litre 1GD (2015 on) or the older 3.0-litre 1KD (up to 2015). A new or louder knock, a shake at idle, a stumble or a misfire usually means something in the fuel, air or exhaust-gas recirculation system isn't working as it should.

If you'd like a ranked list of likely causes for your exact Hilux and symptoms, the DIY Mechanic app can work through it with you. The checks below are a good place to start.

Why is my Hilux idling rough?

  • Injector problems: a leaking, sticking or poorly spraying injector causes a rough idle, knocking, smoke and hard starting. Injector issues are well documented on the older 1KD engine, where faulty injector seals were a known problem.
  • EGR and intake carbon build-up: soot from the EGR system builds up in the intake over time, upsetting the air supply and making the engine run unevenly.
  • Dust in the intake: on the 2.8 Hilux, dust getting past the air filter can contaminate the airflow sensor, causing poor running, power loss and limp mode. It's more common after dusty off-road driving.
  • Contaminated fuel or water in fuel: can cause rough running, misfiring and knocking soon after a fill.
  • Blocked fuel filter: restricts fuel flow and can cause stumbling, especially under load.
  • Glow plugs: if it's only rough for the first minute on a cold morning, the glow plug system may be at fault.
  • Engine mounts: worn mounts don't cause rough running, but they make normal engine vibration feel much worse in the cabin.

What does a diesel knock on a Hilux mean?

A light rattle at idle is normal for a diesel. A louder, sharper knock that's new, gets worse as the engine warms, or comes with smoke or rough running is worth taking seriously. Injector faults are a common cause, and on some engines a failed injector seal or a badly leaking injector can lead to serious engine damage if left alone. If the knock is new and loud, keep driving to a minimum and get it checked soon.

Hilux rough running symptoms and what they usually point to

What you noticeWhat it usually points to

New loud knock plus smokeInjector problem
Rough idle, sluggish, gradually worseEGR or intake carbon build-up
Rough running and limp mode after dusty drivingDust in the intake or airflow sensor
Started right after filling upContaminated fuel or water in fuel

What can I check myself?

  • Check the air filter and airbox. Look for dust on the clean side of the filter or around the seals.
  • Look for a water-in-fuel warning light and check when the fuel filter was last replaced.
  • Note when it happens: cold or hot, idle or under load, and whether it started after a fill or a dusty trip. This helps a mechanic enormously.
  • Check for warning lights. A check-engine or DPF light means there's a stored code worth reading.
  • If the engine is also smoking, our Toyota Hilux blowing smoke guide explains what the smoke colour usually means.

When should I see a diesel mechanic?

Book it in if there's a new loud knock, if the check-engine light is on, if it's smoking or losing power, or if the rough running doesn't settle once warm. A diesel specialist can run injector balance and leak-back tests, read live sensor data and inspect the intake, which is the reliable way to find the cause instead of replacing parts on a hunch.
