MG ZS and MG HS Check-Engine Light: Common Causes (Australia)
What the check-engine light means on an MG ZS or HS, steady versus flashing, the common causes, and the simple checks to do first.

It means the engine computer has stored a fault code. The code could relate to anything from a loose fuel cap to a misfire or a failed sensor. The light alone doesn't tell you which, and that's why reading the code matters more than guessing.
MG is still newer to many independent workshops, so a proper code scan is especially worthwhile. The DIY Mechanic app can rank the likely causes for your exact MG and symptoms too.
Is it safe to drive an MG with the check-engine light on?
A steady light with the car driving normally is usually OK for a short time while you arrange a scan. A flashing check-engine light is different. It usually means a misfire bad enough to damage the catalytic converter. Ease off, avoid hard acceleration and get it checked as soon as you can. If the light comes with overheating, low oil pressure, a big loss of power or smoke, pull over safely and don't keep driving.
What are the common causes?
- Fuel cap not sealing: a loose or damaged cap can trigger an evaporative system code. It's the easiest thing to check.
- Ignition misfire: worn spark plugs or a failing ignition coil can cause a rough idle, hesitation and a flashing light under load.
- Oxygen sensor faults: these sensors monitor the exhaust and can fail with age.
- Evaporative (EVAP) system leaks: hoses and valves that handle fuel vapour can leak or stick.
- Air intake or sensor issues: a split intake hose or a faulty airflow or pressure sensor can upset the fuel mixture.
- Catalytic converter efficiency: often a result of another problem, such as a long-running misfire, rather than the cause itself.
What can I check myself?
- The fuel cap: remove it, check the seal and refit it until it clicks. The light may take several drives to clear if this was the cause.
- How the engine runs: note any rough idle, hesitation, shaking or loss of power, and when it happens.
- Recent work or refuelling: did the light appear right after filling up or after a service?
- Steady or flashing: this is the single most useful thing to tell a mechanic.
- Get the code read: many auto parts stores will read the code, and a basic OBD2 reader is inexpensive. The code tells you where to look.
MG check-engine symptoms and likely causes
| What you notice | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Light on after refuelling, car runs fine | Fuel cap or EVAP system |
| Flashing light and shaking under acceleration | Misfire (plugs or coils) |
| Steady light and slightly worse fuel economy | Oxygen sensor or mixture issue |
| Hesitation and a whooshing sound | Intake air leak |
| Light returns after being cleared | Real fault still present, so read the code |
When should I see a mechanic?
Straight away if the light is flashing or the car runs badly. Otherwise, get the code read within a few days, especially if the light returns after clearing. Many MGs are still under the manufacturer's warranty, so check your coverage before paying for repairs elsewhere.
