GWM Cannon DPF Light and Regeneration Problems (Australia)

What the diesel particulate filter warning means on a GWM Cannon, the general reasons regens fail, and what to check before you book it in.

The GWM Cannon's turbo-diesel uses a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to trap soot from the exhaust, like most modern diesel utes. Every so often the system burns that soot off in a regeneration. If regens can't finish, a warning appears and the ute may eventually go into reduced power. The good news is that the basics of DPF behaviour are the same across diesel utes, so much of what's known from other brands applies to the Cannon too.

GWM is still a fairly new brand to many Australian workshops, so a proper fault-code reading is especially valuable. The DIY Mechanic app can also rank the likely causes for your Cannon and symptoms.

Why does the DPF light come on in my Cannon?

  • Short trips and idling: the most common cause in any diesel. Regens need heat and time to finish.
  • Interrupted regens: switching off during a regen (you may notice a higher idle, the fan running on or a hot smell) leaves it incomplete.
  • Sensor faults: the pressure and temperature sensors that monitor the filter can fail or give false readings.
  • Excess soot from the engine: injector, EGR, intake or boost problems make the engine produce more soot.
  • Oil specification: DPF diesels need low-ash oil to the manufacturer's specification. The wrong oil leaves ash that can't be burnt off.

Is it safe to drive with the DPF light on?

For a short time, usually yes. The light is asking for a regeneration. A steady highway drive often lets it finish. The owner's manual explains what the specific warnings on your Cannon mean and whether a manual regeneration option is available. If the light stays on, other warnings appear or the ute loses power, stop and get it scanned. Driving on an overloaded filter can lead to a much bigger repair.

Regens make the exhaust extremely hot. Never park over dry grass or anything flammable while one is running or straight afterwards.

What can I check myself?

  • Your driving pattern: lots of short runs or idling? A regular highway drive may fix it.
  • Engine oil level: a level rising above full can mean fuel dilution from failed regens. Don't top it up, and have it checked.
  • Service records: confirm the correct oil specification was used.
  • Other warnings: write down any other lights or messages, exactly as shown.
  • Modifications: tunes or exhaust changes can upset the DPF system and may affect warranty.

Cannon DPF symptoms and likely causes

Reduced power with several warningsFilter overloaded or related fault, so get it scanned

When should I see a mechanic?

If the light won't clear after a proper drive, the oil level is rising, power drops or other warnings appear, get it scanned. Because the Cannon is newer to many independent workshops, reading the exact fault codes is the fastest way to the real cause. Check your warranty status too, since the Cannon is still relatively young in Australia and many are covered.
