BYD Atto 3 Won't Power On? Flat 12V Battery Explained (Australia)

Why an EV like the BYD Atto 3 can refuse to power on even with plenty of charge in its main battery, and how to recognise and handle a flat 12-volt battery.

It surprises many new EV owners: an electric car with a charged main battery can still be completely dead. Like most electric cars, the BYD Atto 3 has a separate small 12-volt battery. It powers the locks, screens and computers, and it's what 'wakes up' the high-voltage system. If the 12V battery goes flat, the car may not unlock, won't power on and won't drive, no matter how much range the main battery has.

BYD is still new to many Australian workshops. The DIY Mechanic app can help you work through the likely causes for your Atto 3 and symptoms.

Why won't my Atto 3 turn on when the main battery is charged?

The high-voltage battery normally keeps the 12V battery topped up while the car is on, and at times while it's parked. But the car needs a healthy 12V supply to start that process in the first place. If the 12V battery has run down, the car can't wake the high-voltage system to recharge it. That's why an EV can appear completely dead with a full main battery.

What drains the 12V battery?

  • Long periods parked: if the car sits unused for a long time, background systems can slowly drain the 12V battery.
  • Accessories: hardwired dashcams, trackers or other add-ons running while the car is parked.
  • Something left on: interior lights, a door or boot not fully closed, or the car not fully shutting down.
  • An ageing or faulty 12V battery: like any battery, it can weaken over time.
  • Software behaviour: manufacturers sometimes release software updates that change how the 12V battery is managed. A dealer can check whether your car is up to date.

What are the warning signs?

  • The car is slow to respond to the key card or app.
  • Screens flicker or take longer than usual to come on.
  • Warnings about the low-voltage or 12V battery appear on the display.
  • The car powers on but shows multiple unrelated warnings.

What should I do if my Atto 3 is dead?

Check the owner's manual first. It explains how to get into the car with a flat 12V battery and the correct way to give it a boost, including the exact connection points. Follow it carefully. EVs are not always jump-started the same way as petrol cars, and connecting incorrectly can damage electronics. If you're unsure, call roadside assistance and tell them it's an EV with a flat 12V battery.

Never touch or disconnect the high-voltage system. Its cables are usually bright orange, and it's dangerous to work on. Don't use your EV to jump-start another car unless the manual specifically says it's allowed.

Repeated flat 12V even with daily useFaulty 12V battery or charging fault

When should I see a mechanic?

If it happens more than once, get the car checked rather than just boosting it again. A BYD dealer or EV-capable workshop can test the 12V battery, check whether the car is charging it properly and look for anything draining it. Many Atto 3s are still under warranty, so check your cover first.
